Strings & Orchestra: MU4130
The NCSSM Orchestra is a string orchestra with an emphasis on masterpieces of the string and symphony orchestra music literature. Concepts emphasized include performance technique, tone production, ensemble intonation, and musical interpretation and advanced string technique. Winds and percussion will be added to the string section from the Wind Ensemble as required by the literature selected for performance. Interested students are encouraged to register for all three trimesters of this course. This course is repeatable for credit. Individuals with irresolvable schedule conflicts with other courses may request permission to enroll via Individualized Study option by meeting with Registrar.
The NCSSM Performing Ensembles are dedicated to the teaching, performance, study and cultivation of ensemble music and literature of the highest quality. These performing ensembles are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression, of vital service and importance to its members and to NCSSM. Through exemplary practices in organization, training, and presentation, these ensembles provide effective experiences in musical performance and in music culture for its members. The NCSSM Performing Ensembles seek to offer outstanding performances each semester and to enhance the institutional spirit and character of NCSSM. To music as an art and experience, the NCSSM performing ensembles bring increasing artistry, understanding, and respect by efforts within our own immediate sphere and by providing leadership through cooperation with other musical ensembles pursuing similar musical goals. Members of NCSSM performing ensembles are encouraged to audition for regional, state, and national honors ensembles, including all NCMEA, NAfME and ASTA sponsored events.
The Orchestra typically performs in four major concerts per year. During the first semester, the ensemble focuses on ensemble development and string orchestra repertoire. Fall repertoire has included works such as Greig's Holberg Suite, Barber's String Serenade, Mendelssohn Sinfonias, and other great string orchestra repertoire. The orchestra has also recently performed several "pops" concerts including shows with regional jazz, rock, and pop bands. During the winter, we typically program a symphony for full orchestra. Past repertoire includes Beethoven Symphonies, Dvorak's New World, Mendelssohn's Reformation, and many others. We also typically join with the NCSSM Chorale to perform a large work during the winter term. Past repertoire has included Vivaldi's Gloria, Mozart Missa Brevi, Schubert G major Mass, Haydn D Major Mass, and many others. Finally, we typically present a concerto concert in the spring, featuring NCSSM's top soloists with the orchestra. Auditions are held in November.
Each year, we have several students participate in NCMEA events, including Eastern Regional Orchestra, NC All State Honors Orchestra, various NAfME National events, and American String Teachers Association National Honor Orchestra. Mr. Laird is strongly involved in these organizations and we support these events fully.
