Designed as an experiential workshop, this course develops foundational ensemble playing, harmonic fluency, and improvisational confidence in a small jazz group setting. Students will explore core jazz styles—including blues, modal, bebop, and Latin jazz—while learning to navigate lead sheets, comp effectively, and communicate dynamically without relying on written arrangements. Through active listening, collaborative rehearsal, and guided performance, musicians transform individual technical skill into cohesive, interactive ensemble playing. There will be a strong emphasis on jazz theory and ear training/listening throughout the course. No prior jazz experience is necessary, but intermediate proficiency on an instrument is strongly recommended for this course.
