Modern Band is an interactive, performance-based course that introduces students to the instruments, styles, and collaborative practices of contemporary popular music. Rooted in modern music education principles, students will learn through a hands-on, song-first approach—building instrumental technique, ear training, and arrangement skills by rehearsing and performing as small modern ensembles (cover bands). This course covers pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, indie, and electronic genres while developing skills in guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, and digital music tools. Rather than following a rigid curriculum, students direct their learning through self-designed or collaborative projects—whether that means forming a live band, writing and arranging original songs, or producing beats and electronic tracks. This course provides the tools, mentorship, and studio time needed to take a musical idea from initial concept to finished performance or polished recording.
Open to all students. No prior musical experience or sight-reading ability is required. Beginner and experienced musicians alike will be challenged at their individual skill level.
